Hernia Mesh

Hernia mesh is typically used during surgery for hernia repairs. The products are supposed to help strengthen the damaged tissue – but these products are creating complications that are actually injuring patients.

The manufacturers of these products have a duty to ensure that their products are safe for patient use, and have neglected their duty to do so. Those who are injured by surgical mesh should consult first with their doctor, and second with an attorney who can advise them about any potential case.

News Reports Indicate Problems With Hernia Mesh

In Ireland, New Zealand, Canada and the U.S., the news media has reported on stories from patients who indicated that surgical mesh was causing pain and creating other medical problems. Many of those patients were hernia patients. The mesh is designed to reinforce damaged tissue. But over time, patients may experience colon blockages, bowel obstruction, pain, infection or other medical issues. The hernia mesh may have shifted its position or shrank, causing problems for the patients.

One New Zealand woman had surgery in 2008, and has been fighting for seven years for compensation for her injuries from the mesh. She was forced to quit her well-paying job shortly after the surgery due to pain.

In October 2016, the Journal of the American Medical Association released a report that indicated that the long-term benefits of using mesh in surgery is “unknown” because of the complications that often come with using mesh in surgery. The study included 3,242 patients, and noted there is a risk of long-term complications that sometimes leads to more surgery.

No surgical mesh product has been recalled, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has received reports about adverse effects of some of the medical products. Patients are reporting problems with mesh products including Ethicon Physiomesh, Atrium C-Qur, Bard Ventralex, Covidien Parietex Surgical Mesh, Covidien Parietex Composite Mesh and ProGrip Mesh. Each type of mesh has had different types of failures described, including migration of the mesh, pain while urinating and pain and swelling of the groin.
