Excessive Use of Social Media Sites Associated With Severe Mental Health Issues
Social media plays a big role in the lives of teenagers. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) states that ninety percent of teens aged 13-17 have used social media and at least seventy-five percent report having at least one active social media profile. The safety of these platforms, particularly Facebook and Instagram, have been called into question since the release of the "Facebook Papers" in 2021. Now, researchers are reporting that the use of social media, especially the apps that are image-based are linked to serious mental health issues. These issues include (but not limited to), depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, sleeplessness, eating disorders and other serious conditions.

According to a story in the Wall Street Journal, Facebook's own research has shown the app may be negatively impacting mental health and self-esteem, especially in teenage girls. The report also stated that Facebook has been researching the impact of Instagram on young users for the past three years and has consistently found that it can increase negative thoughts and feelings in some kids. Yet, it failed to take steps in reducing this harm.
